What is a Hosted Desktop, and why would you want one?

=> A Hosted Desktop is a remotely accessed computer with all of your files and the applications to run them. The trick is that you can access your desktop from anywhere, to send an email, work on a project, or check your calendar.

With a Hosted Desktop, you can have the convenience of all your files and programs being in one place, and you can then access them from anywhere, at any time, with any device. Be it a netbook, a tablet, or a smartphone. Hosted Desktops are great for people who travel a lot, who like to work while they commute, or who take their work home.

=> Gone are the days of worrying about whether the version of the document you have on your netbook is the most up-to-date one or not.

Rather than having copies of your documents stored separately on all of your devices, you can instead save them in one single place in the cloud and always edit the same material. That way whenever you open up a document, it’s still the correct version!

=> Have you ever faced the problem of running a Windows-specific file on your Mac? What about having to relearn how to use a new program for every different operating system?

Since the Hosted Desktop is a virtualised environment, once you log in, you’re back to using the same Windows operating system as always. No more file compatibility issues. Oh, and if your mobile computing platform lacks the power requirements for running, say, video editing software, that’s okay too. Your device uses the hardware of powerful servers to run any software you need.

Imagine that your mobile computer becomes a remote with which to control the Hosted Desktop. You will no longer be limited by your current hardware or software, instead always tapping into the reliability of a full Desktop PC.

Perhaps you’ve wanted to upgrade your computer’s operating system, but the hardware is too old. With a Hosted Desktop, you can give your equipment a second breath of life and use Windows 7 without having to purchase new computers.

Why don’t I host my desktop at home or in the office, and remotely access that?

That is an option, but there are several reasons why you might want to consider going with TCP’s cloud-based solution instead.

It’s the Cheaper Option

Due to vast economies of scale, our state-of-the-art server farms located in the UK reduce the per-unit costs of hosting your desktop below what doing it yourself would cost you. Remember, you’re not just saving on the values of staff or hardware - monthly energy bills are also reduced. And without the need to host your servers, you won’t have to pay as much to rent office space or have as large a carbon footprint.

It’s much less of a headache.

Not only will you save money, but you’re also getting all of the heavy lifting done for you. For example, how much time do you have every week to spend on keeping on top of security updates? If you’re hosting and accessing essential documents and emails remotely, you need to be sure that the connection is secure. Do you have a team of cybersecurity professionals always on the lookout for new exploits and malware?

What about your data redundancy protocols - are you sure you want to spend valuable staff time running backups on a daily basis to minimise downtime in case of data loss? And do you have offsite data storage? We do.

With a Hosted Desktop, Those Computer People can offer you an SSL encrypted connection of the calibre used in online banking transactions; fully automated daily backups; and of course a built-in anti-virus solution.

What about compatibility issues?

Citrix Xen, the software we run on our servers, is continually being updated to extend its compatibility to as many platforms as possible. With so many different mobile devices and operating systems on the market, this is the best way to ensure your Hosted Desktop is accessible to as many of them as possible.

“I have a PC in the office, and I have a Mac at home as well as an iPad on the move. Thanks to the Hosted Desktop I can access Microsoft Windows on my Mac and my iPad. There is no need to worry about an incompatibility between operating systems because all my files are in one location.”
 - Simon Smale, Director, Chartered Accountant

Any PC, Mac, or Linux machine can run the virtualised environment of your Hosted Desktop. And mobile support extends to all three of the major operating systems - iOS on iPhones and iPads, Android, and last but not least the Blackberry smartphone. And since our servers provide the processing power, you can even use older devices that would be unable to run a new operating system on their own.

And of course - Those Computer People will have 24/7 server monitoring, with tech support if anything goes wrong.

Technology is there to make our lives easier, not harder, and that’s why there’s nothing worse than logging on to send an essential document to someone only to find out that there’s a problem and you can’t access your Hosted Desktop. That’s why Those Computer People will offer your IT support by qualified and experienced technicians; as well as a 99.99% uptime guarantee.

Alright, but I still don’t necessarily want to sign up for a long-term contract. Is there any way I can do a sort of trial run?

Ah, but that’s the beauty of it - long-term contracts are not necessary! You don’t have any obligation to sign up for a year, or even longer, as you might have to with other providers. TCP123 UK understands that trying out new technology is sometimes a little like buying clothes over the internet - you don’t want to commit until you’ve tried them on for size.

A few other features you might love:

  • What you get is a fully customised, persistent desktop.

  • Wherever you left off, that’s precisely the desktop you’ll come back to.

  • Continuity of business even during a local disaster situation.

  • So your customers can know that no matter what happens, your reliability is unparalleled!
